TSA Rules for Cosmetics & Beauty Products

TSA Rules for Cosmetics & Beauty Products

Packing is one of my least favorite activities of all time (though nothing can rival unpacking). I traveled a record amount of times in 2017 between work trips, family trips, and my honeymoon, but I already considered myself an expert traveler before then. Hopefully my TSA outline will help you navigate security that much faster.

How Do I Get Through TSA Security Quickly?

I’m not going to say anything you don’t already know here. You have two options here: join TSA precheck or check your luggage. Everyone else will have to pull out the liquids! The bonus of precheck is you don’t have to remove your laptop from your bag and you won’t need to remove your belt or shoes. Heyyyy, dignity! How you been?

How Do I Carry On Liquids?

TSA allows travelers to bring a quart-sized bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes in your carry
on bag, so stop trying the stuff your skincare into that sandwich baggie. Upgrade! You have to remove the bag from your carry on luggage when you go through security and place it in a bin.

How Much Liquid Can I Carry On?

Each bottle can be a maximum of 3.4 ounces (100 mL), and anything larger than that has to be packed in your checked luggage. 3.4 ounces is actually a lot larger than you think, so double check the fill claim on your
products. Most moisturizers, masks, exfoliants and suncare products fit the bill.

What About Makeup and Beauty Products?

Liquid makeup products like liquid eyeliner, liquid foundation and nail polish do need to be included in your quart-sized bag. Liquid foundation bottles can take up a lot of space, so consider traveling with pressed powder foundation instead. Lipgloss, however, can travel safely in your purse. Stick deodorant, deodorant crystals and deodorant powders can travel baggie-free as well. Despite popular belief (meaning, I previously thought this was untrue), disposable razors and electric razors are allowed in carry on bags!

THESE ITEMS NEED TO GO IN A QUART SIZE BAG

  • Gel deodorant
  • Spray deodorant
  • Hairspray
  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Lotion
  • Liquid foundation
  • Liquid Eyeliner
  • Nail polish
  • Sunscreen

What Else Can I Bring?

TSA now has a “What Can I Bring?” search feature! When you search “hairspray,” you get…

  • Carry On Bags: Yes (Less than 3.4oz/100 ml allowed)
  • Checked Bags: Yes
