There are so many things we know are bad for us, but we do them anyway. Drinking soda. Not removing makeup before bed. Overeating. Not wearing sunscreen. Not protecting your skin from pollution. According to a new study by H2O+ Beauty, only 33 percent of people purchase skincare products to protect their skin against pollution and other environmental stressors even though a majority understand the risk of exposure to such chemicals.
In the past year, I’ve noticed a lot of chatter around anti-pollution, and it makes sense. Almost 50% of people in the U.S. live in a county with unhealthy levels of ozone or particle pollution, according to the American Lung Association.
To the average person, adding an anti-pollution product to your skin care routine might feel like just another step in a long list of “good for you” things you should do, but probably won’t. I know that feeling! I’ve struggled with applying SPF every single day for years, knowing the harmful effects of UVA and UVB rays. Read my tips for making the commitment to daily SPF.
H2O+ Beauty sent me their full SPF range, so I made it my mission to test each one to find my perfect match. Each of their sunscreens offers a different added benefit, from anti-aging to hydration. My favorite of the bunch though is H2O+ Beauty AquaDefense Protective Matcha Moisturizer SPF 40, which delivers sun protection as well as protection from pollutants.

For me, a sunscreen has to feel good, smell good, and not interfere with my makeup, and I’m happy to report this sunscreen delivers on all counts.
Compared to their other sunscreens, AquaDefense is ultra-light. They’re all relatively lightweight, especially considering other SPFs I’ve used in the past, but this one in particular has a very thin consistency. The bottle says to shake well before using, but even so, it’s very thin, which I love, love, love.
The consistency allows me to spread it across my skin very easily, and it doesn’t feel heavy at all. I use 2-3 pumps for my face and another 2 pumps for my neck and chest.
Each sunscreen has a slightly different fragrance to mask the traditional sunscreen scent. If you’re sensitive to fragrance, you may not love this, but I 100% prefer a fragranced sunscreen.
I wish I was skilled at describing scents. It has a floral scent that’s very inviting. It’s the type of scent I would love to have in a hand soap or body wash.
I think what I like most though is that regardless of fragrance or no fragrance, the scent dissipates. I’m not left smelling perfumed or sunscreen-like.
As soon as I spread AquaDefense SPF 40 across my skin, it instantly absorbs. Normally I like to let a moisturizer sink into the skin for a couple minutes before applying makeup, but I have had zero issues, which is such a relief.
In fact, I’ve been applying an oil to my skin each morning, allowing that to absorb for several minutes, and then following it with this, and even still, no issues with the wear of my makeup.
