All my curly haired girls, raise your hand! I’ve shared with you my love/hate relationship with my curls. It is so simple to scrunch, diffuse and go natural, but maintenance after day one hair is tough!
Curly Hair Problems
Lately, I’ve been trying to get to the point where I can go an entire week without washing my hair, and straightening my hair seems to be the way to go. I wash, blow dry and straighten on day one, then on days two through five (I haven’t quite made it to seven yet) I use dry shampoo and touch up with my straightener if needed.
The only thing bumming me out has been the day one styling process. My hair is kinky curly (I always call it OG Taylor Swift hair) so to get maximum volume (this is critical!) and the best straightening action I have to blow out my hair with a round brush and follow it with a flat iron.
Unfortunately, this process takes so long! I’ve been practicing my blowout skills for a couple years now, and while I am getting better and better with the final result, it still takes me so long! I can never get it perfectly straight with a hair dryer alone, so in comes the flat iron, which often steals back some of my hard earned volume.
A New Way to Straighten
When I found the InStyler MAX 2-Way Rotating Iron, I thought maybe it could work! It is a straightener and curling wand in one. It takes the “flat” out of flat iron! The barrel rotates while the hair brush combs through the hair.
The curling wand is tourmaline ceramic to give you ultimate straightening power and the hair brush end has ionic bristles to keep the hair shiny and smooth. The brush aspect is appealing to me because a flat iron simply presses your hair between two plates, so it often takes several passes through the iron it get a smooth, straight end result.
It’s also incredibly difficult for me with a traditional flat iron to get a perfect straightening job when I start with curly hair. I made it a point to test out the InStyler MAX on curly hair to see what it could do.
The barrel rotates in both directions, you just have to clamp the device to change the direction. It comes with a thermal guard for the outside of the barrel to protect yourself when you’re straightening your hair or when you’re first starting out (yesss!)
Another part of the appeal with this hot tool is the ability to achieve multiple styles. You can straighten, curl, create waves or add body. You may have noticed from my recent YouTube videos that I like to wear my hair with loose curls sometimes, which takes two tools for me to achieve.
My first impressions video speaks for itself. The InStyler MAX 2-Way Rotating Iron really does have intense straightening power, and I didn’t even have to compromise on volume.
I think it did a good job on my curly, wavy natural hair. Look at that before and after!! I used the level three heat setting. It has four heat settings, all the way from 285F to 425F. I did two passes on each section, but I think if I bumped it up to level four, I probably wouldn’t need to do that.
It was really easy to use. On the straightening end it didn’t save time per se, but it does save time in my hair routine from start to finish because now I don’t have to spend such a long time on my blowout! I simply finger comb through my curls with the quickest blow dry (something I never would have contemplated before).
I think the results speak for themselves. Tell me what you think in the comments!
