Staples like turkey and mashed potatoes will always have a seat at the dinner table, but I love to try at least one new recipe every Thanksigiving. I found out the hard way that it’s very important to take recipes for a test driving before adding them to the chaos that is Turkey Day meal prep.
A week before the big day and there’s ice covering the streets. I am not leaving this house, and luckily I don’t have to because Walmart Grocery To Go is delivering all the things I need for my Thanksgiving test kitchen experiments.
If you haven’t heard me rave about Walmart’s new grocery delivery service, you have to check out my review. You order your groceries online and they’re delivered to your door. Easy peasy.
I’m not a fan of going to the grocery store around the holidays and fighting through the crowds, so when snow and icy roads are added into the mix, I’m out! Walmart Grocery To Go is a life saver on a regular day, but today it’s my hero.
The first recipe I tried was an A++ and will definitely make an appearance at my dinner table year-round. These Honey Cinnamon Roasted Sweet Potatoes from Buns In My Oven are to die for. I recommend these if you’re looking for an alternative to traditional marshmallow-filled sweet potato casserole. The only change I’ll make is doubling the recipe!
I was hesitant in the past to order produce with Walmart Grocery To Go simply because I am so picky when selecting my veggies, but I’ve done it several times now and I’ve never had a problem.
I added turkey seasoned with cayenne to this Butternut Squash Soup recipe from All Recipes. I would absolutely make this again but with Italian sausage, and I’ll puree all the veggies next time instead of leaving it a little chunky. This is a text I received from Xavier, “The baby paste with the seasoned meat was delicious.” I’ll take that as manchild approved.
Our next Thanksgiving recipe candidate is a Spaghetti Squash Casserole I based loosely off a recipe from My Heart Beats. My version ended up being a little bland, so I think I will add some heat and additional seasoning. This won’t make it to my Thanksgiving table, but it has potential.
Of course dessert had to make it in here! I tried Once A Month Meals’ No Bake Pumpkin Oatmeal Cookies, and I’m very glad I tested them because they were way too sweet. You could probably reduce the white sugar by a half cup and they would still be on the sugary end, so play around with them. Also, the recipe doesn’t contain any real pumpkin, so I want to try adding some in and seeing what happens.
