Engaged! | Platte River Campground

South Platte River Campgrounds

Xavier and I have realized that we need to explore Colorado more. After two years of living in this beautiful state, we haven’t gone camping once, and we love to camp… or “glamp,” as his friend puts it. For the record, there is nothing wrong with sleeping in the wilderness with the comforts of home.

Since our third summer in Denver is quickly coming to a close, we decided to plan a last-minute trip to the Platte River Campground near Deckers, CO, a recommendation from a friend and fellow blogger, Katie of The Morning Fresh.

We left work Friday afternoon and arrived just in time to nab a site and set up camp before sunset. Luckily, the weather had been iffy all day, otherwise I’ll bet it would have been full up.

What you need to know:

  • $15 per night (2 vehicles)
  • 11 campsites (very open, not much privacy)
  • No reservations
  • Open year round, tent camping only
  • 14 day limit
  • Dogs welcome
  • Bathrooms on site (vault toilet)
  • No running water
  • Next to the river
  • Bring bug spray. Seriously.

Scrappy woke me up Saturday morning ready for her usual 6 am walk. Thanks, girl. But really, because the scenery was amazing.

While we slept, the lot filled up and every site was occupied. Thank goodness, the crummy weather stayed away.

Small Kong Dog Harness

Xavier and I started off our day exploring the short trail behind the campground. Scrappy Coco got to test out her new harness! She may be tiny, but she is 16 pounds of pure muscle. A few weeks ago while we were hiking Matthews Winters, a fellow hiker asked, “Who is walking who?” Figured it was time for a change. We chose the KONG Reflective Dog Harness because it had a padded chest plate.

After our hike, Xavier said he wanted a picture of the three of us. He asked a man at the neighboring campsite to take our picture (but he actually asked the man to take a video). I’m smiling, holding Scraps, waiting for the picture to snap, but Xavier kept glancing over at me… here’s a video.

Of course I said yes! After six years of dating, I knew it was a matter of time, but I’m happy to say that I was totally surprised by the proposal. That was very important to him, so good job- you nailed it. He told me he was bummed because he messed up his speech, but honestly I was in a state of shock and didn’t hear a word. I’m SO happy he took a video because now I’ll never forget.

Cushion Cut Engagement Ring with a Halo Setting

He is very proud of the ring he chose, as he should be- it’s a gorgeous, classic piece. In case you need a recommendation, he bought the diamond from Blue Nile and the band from Kay Jewelers. It’s white gold, and the diamond is cushion cut with a halo setting. Those are all the deets I have!

Neither of us are very eager to plan a wedding, so this could turn into a long engagement. I’ll be looking for some serious Pinspiration for DIY and low-budget ideas. Follow Modern Martha on Pinterest to stay up to date.
