My Trip to LA (Thanks Safeway!)

LA Trip03

So, don’t tell Denver, but I kind of have this thing for Los Angeles. I will probably (and by probably, I mean definitely) never move there (traffic, gas prices, and so. many. people.), but it is truly an incredible place to visit. There is so much to do, so many places to eat, so many things to see (I swear, this is not a paid testimonial). Back in October I entered the Safeway Real Taste of Mexico Challenge featuring Marcela Valladolid’s new line of products, and believe it or not, my Avocado Pork Enchiladas with Cheesy Lime Cream Sauce won me a trip to Los Angeles.

I would apologize for the over-the-wing shot, but I’m pretty sure there is some sort of overpowering, uncontrollable force that compels anyone sitting in a wing-seat to take this photo. Anyhoo, I chose Xavier as my companion (duh) because he was my loyal taste tester.

I’m sure you can imagine all of the pain and suffering he experienced devouring these creamy, cheesy enchiladas, so I owed it to him to invite him along for the journey.

We landed mid-afternoon on Friday. First stop, Hertz. I would normally skip over this part, but we had a great experience thanks to the agent that assisted us.. if only I could remember her name!! I looked for her name on my receipt, but no luck. Anyway, LA Hertz on Airport Blvd, if you’re reading this, thanks!

After that, we enjoyed ourselves some killer sandwiches from Bay Cities thanks to an amazing recommendation from my friend Lindsay. They messed up my order, but it ended up being a wonderful mistake. I ordered a pastrami sandwich, Xavier ordered an Italian sandwich, and somehow this become one sandwich. End result? The most amazing sandwich I’ve ever had. I highly recommend this combo!

After exploring 3rd Street Promenade and Santa Monica Pier, we went down to the beach for our first Pacific Ocean experience (or Specific Ocean if you’re Xavier). “It’s my first time in the Specific Ocean. Or.. this specific ocean.”

Later Friday night we headed to Westside Comedy Theater in Santa Monica for their improv show, Mission IMPROVable. Xavier found out about the show through Trip Advisor, and I’m glad he did because the show was such a blast. Tickets were only $10, which is amazing anywhere, but it’s particularly amazing in LA because movie tickets are $15, and it’s even MORE amazing because the show was good. Very good, in fact.

LA Trip07

Saturday morning we ate at The Griddle Cafe on Sunset. It looks busy, but they were cramming people in and seating people quickly. We only had to wait 15 minutes, but even if we had to wait 30 or more, it would have been worth it.

After we stuffed ourselves, Saturday was all about PHAMExpo (Professional Hair & Makeup Exposition) in Pasadena. Xavier was a trooper and came along as my photographer. He played the part incredibly well. More on the expo later- stay tuned for a post with all of the goodies I picked up!

Then we went to The Grove and walked around the shops and ate dinner at The Farmers Market. We went to the top of the parking garage to catch a glimpse of the Hollywood sign before sunset. It’s pretty far away, but there it is!

I wish I could say Xavier and I did something epic Saturday night, but after hours of walking around the expo and driving all around Los Angeles, we were wiped.

LA Trip09

Sunday morning we only had a few more hours left of our California getaway, so we spent it at Santa Monica pier. The weather was perfect, it wasn’t too crowded.. and we even rode the ferris wheel!

LA Trip10On our way back to the airport, we stopped in Venice along Abbot Kinney and explored the shops and boutiques. While eating our mac and cheese topped pulled pork sandwich (!!!) from Chop Daddy’s, we reflected on our whirlwind, 48-hour LA trip. Xavier and I came to the conclusion that we have to go back to California because there are so many more things to do, places to see, things to eat.

I leave you with this:
