I love food, and I love supporting small business, so a box like Hatchery is just up my alley. Hatchery is a monthly subscription box that connects you with sample-size artisanal ingredients and condiments- a true foodie box. This is a box for people that love to cook and experiment with new flavors.
The Tasting Boxes are $20 per month + free shipping in the US and contain 5-6 handpicked items from across the country. You can expect to receive ingredients, such as condiments, spreads, cooking sauces, jams, honeys, syrups, oils, vinegars, salts, spices, seasonings and specialty baking ingredients. The box I receives has a sauce, jam, honey, oil, salsa and spice blend. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. You can also purchase full-size versions of anything you’ve tried in Hatchery’s marketplace.
The box feels high-end. The presentation is beautiful with the paper-wrapped items, the highly detailed information booklet and the wooden tasting spoons. And I just read on their Instagram that the paper is eco-friendly!
“Our new box and crinkle paper are made from 100% post-consumer fibers, meaning no new trees are used during production. And all our wrapping paper material is fully biodegradable as well, so we ask that you please do your part by recycling your box and all packing materials.”
Hatchery focuses on natural, small-batch products that you can’t just find in any grocery store. The pamphlet that’s includes tells you about each product, the people that made them, and very clearly labels things as vegan/gluten free/nut free/peanut free/soy free/certified organic/etc, which makes it SO easy on subscribers. At a glance I can see that all but one item I received is gluten-free and several items are vegan. My only wish is that they would include a full ingredient listing on the pamphlet for each item.
Potlicker Kitchen Strawberry Chipotle Jam (full size retails for $9.50) | Bethel, VT
This is hands down my favorite item in the bunch. I love when ingredients that you wouldn’t normally think of mixing come together so beautifully. The jam is sweet, and then there’s a nice little touch of spice as it goes down. I could definitely see myself purchasing a full size of this.
Causey’s BBQ Sweet’ N Smoky (full size retails for $8) | Atlanta, GA
This is a yummy George-style sauce inspired by John Causey’s family recipes. I love that the smoky flavors comes from real smoked wood instead of artificial flavors. This is another good one, and Hatchery has a recipe for BBQ Pulled Pork Mac N’ Cheese (oh-my-god) that I MUST try. The BBQ sauce smelled good the moment I opened the bottle.
Big Island Bees Ohai Lehua Honey (full size retails for $11) | Captain Cook, HI
This honey is made from three distinct blossoms on the Big Island of Hawaii. This particular honey, the Ohai Lehua, comes from the Lehua blossom, and is sweet yet mild and certified organic. The full size price point is a little high for me right now, but I do recommend it- it tasted divine.
Calivirgin Jalapeno Garlic Olive Oil (full size retails for $20) | Lodi, CA
This item was a surprise for me. I was a little hesitant about jalapeno garlic olive oil, but it was really good. At first your taste the garlic, and then the jalapeno flavors sneaks in. I was trying this lightly on bread at first, but then I tried sautéing from potatoes in it and that’s when the flavors really came to life.
Ole Man’s Original Blend Spice Rub (full size retails for $5) | New Orleans, LA
This sweet, spicy, smoky blend is made by a Kansas City native living in New Orleans. I used this in place of chili powder in chili last week, and it was ah-mazing. I used less than I normally would because it has some good kick.
La Fundidora Fuego Salso (full size retails for $9.50) | Brooklyn, NY
I was most hesitant about trying this salsa, because I love spicy things, but with a name like Fuego, I could only assume this was some HOT salsa. It did turn out to be hot, but the perfect kind of heat that enhances flavor instead of covering it.
What I love about the product selection in the Tasting Box is that it covers a range of price points, locations and flavor profiles: sweet, savory and spicy. I also love the cute little tasting spoon included. It’s a nice touch, and you really do just want to dive right in and taste everything the moment you open the box.
I love to cook, but sometime I find myself in a rut and can’t think beyond my standard go-to meals. Hatchery helps you mix it up and keep your pantry full of unique, artisan ingredients. I really enjoy their recipe blog posts that show you ways to use the ingredients you’ve received. Even if you’re not quite sure about subscribing, I do recommend following Hatchery on Instagram– I love their aesthetic, and I’m really enjoying their quick how-to videos like their 15 Second Cocktails series and their How To series. It really speaks to the quality of the service.
