I love candles. I love buying them, I love burning them, I love smelling them. And I don’t just buy a bunch of candles and never use them- I like to burn candles down to the very last drop of wax (Xavier does, too. Don’t let him tell you any differently). I look for a candle with good burn time, an amazing scent, and a nice aesthetic, so when I heard about Glint Candles, I was eager to put their soy candles to the test.
Created by Lacey and Chris, a couple living in California, Glint Candles was born from a passion for candles and eco-friendly living. Lacey has been making these candles for years, and finally after years of poking, Chris was able to convince her to sell them. A note to Chris, I’m glad you did, because the candle I received, which is burning in the living room next to me, is divine.
The candle I received was a 1 Pound Custom Soy Candle. If you’re going the custom route, you select the size candle you want, either 1/2 Pound ($19.99) or 1 Pound ($29.99), then the stamp you want on the outside of the jar, and then the scent you want. It just takes a couple days. There are 12 stamps and 12 scents to choose from for plenty of combinations. A half pound candle burns for about 70 hours, while the pound candle burns for about 120 hours, so if you want more burn time, more stamps and/or more scents, two half-pounders is the way to go.
I chose the seahorse design because it was my favorite, but my next one will have to be the heart. And it’s not just any heart- the heart and brain stamps are realistic representations. Love it. The look the stamps give the candles is so refreshing from the traditional here-is-a-picture-of-the-
The scent I selected was “Rock & A Hard Place,” orange with a kick of chili pepper. The scent is so cozy and so refreshing. The citrus gives a little sweetness, but the chili pepper adds a unique touch. Every time Xavier’s best friend comes over, he comments on how good the candle smells. To me, it’s like a fancy orange soda. The fragrance is highly concentrated- I’ve been impressed at how well the scent fills our 1,000 square foot home. I’ve tried plenty of other candles, soy or otherwise, that would only fill a small room, but my Glint Candle I’ve placed on the credenza by the front door, and it reaches each bedroom. Even when it’s not burning, you can still smell it if you leave the lid off.
The look of the candle was nice and the scent was impressive, so what else is there? Well, I really have to brag on how well the candle burned. It was so even, and I didn’t experience much of the frosting that you traditionally see in soy candles. It did bubble a little each time it dried, and towards the very end there was light frosting, but with the white wax, it wasn’t very noticeable unless you were looking for it.
I really enjoyed reading their article on candle care. To help your candle burn longer and more evenly, you need to first trim the wick. For the first burn, you should let it burn for a few hours until the wax on top os all one big nice puddle, which will keep your wax burning evenly on subsequent burns. If you burn too long though, the wax will get so hot that the candle will evaporate (something I’d never thought about before). 3-4 hours is the optimum burning time to get the most life out of your candle.
I love that they promote the reuse of the glass candle jar. I’ve already been thinking that my seahorse jar will make for a great brush holder. I also read on their site that they are working on a line of candle inserts so you can refill your jars. Pretty sweet.
You can also choose from pre-stamped candles, One Pound for $27.99 or 1/2 Pound for $17.99. Glint Candles are available in a few locations in California, and online at the Glint Candles website. They offer free shipping on orders of $50 or more, and $9.95 flat rate shipping on orders less than $50.
I’d like to thank Lacey and Chris very, very much for letting me try out their candles! Next on my list to try will be: High & Dry, Just Chillin’ and Quick & Dirty.
