Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak Dry Shampoo Review

Not Your Mother's Clean Freak Refreshing Dry Shampoo

I have a confession. I don’t wash my hair every day (!!!) Ok, so not that crazy.. but every now and then you need a little something to get you through to your next wash. Straightening my curly hair takes time, and I’ll be damned if a good flat iron job lasts me less than three full days. Dry shampoo has become a staple in my routine.

I have heard so many great things about Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak Refreshing Dry Shampoo, but I hadn’t tried it until I received a travel size in my Influenster Violet VoxBox.

I’ve now tried dry shampoos in both spray and powder form. I prefer spray formulas because, while I’m sure there is some lost product during application, it tends to be mess-free and easy (and fast!!) to apply. Every now and then, even when my hair is a greasy, grimy mess, and I know I absolutely, positively NEED to shampoo my hair right that minute, I turn to dry shampoo as a quick fix, and a spray format works well for my on-the-go lifestyle. You spray it in and brush it through. I spray it lightly along my part, and then lift up sections along the crown and spray at the root. I let it sit for a few seconds and then brush through to distribute the product.

Formula & Finish

Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak Dry Shampoo says it will give you a “lite matte finish.” A great dry shampoo can strike a balance between dry and shiny, and this one does just that. It has been really great for my shorter layers. My shorter layers sit partially on my forehead, so the hair picks up oil from my skin throughout the day and ends up looking piecey. I spray this on the shorter layers, even just after a wash, to prevent that from happening throughout the day.

I find that this doesn’t leave as much of a grey or white cast as many other dry shampoos do, but do not apply all over your hair. The formula can be a little chalky if you apply too much, so spot treatment is key. Do not apply to the ends of your hair, only the roots. The formulation can also be very drying if you apply this too many days in a row. At a certain point, you really just need to wash your hair and get rid of the buildup. I have a dry scalp, and this dry shampoo made my scalp a bit itchy.

You can use the chalkiness to your advanced to build texture when styling your hair. My hair is too short for a ponytail right now, but I know this dry shampoo would be great for building volume when creating updo’s.

It has a clean, fresh, laundry detergent-esque scent that is a bit too strong for my liking. The scent is my least favorite part about the product. There’s not much I can say about it other than that it’s just not for me.

At $5.99 (Ulta), this is one of the best priced dry shampoos out there.

Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak Dry Shampoo is affordable, easy to apply and effective at absorbing oil, but can be drying and chalky if too much is applied. While this is not my favorite dry shampoo of all time, the great price bumps up with would-be 3 out of 5 star rating to a 3.5.
