I feel like most people know if they have curly or straight hair from a very young age. Seems like a pretty basic thing. Growing up I had straight hair – I’ve even looked back at pictures to confirm. But one day, when I was about 12, I got out of the shower and didn’t do anything to my hair – no scrunching, no towel-drying, no brushing. I just let it air dry. When my mom came home, she looked at me and said, “What did you do to your hair?” She didn’t believe me when I said nothing at all! I was suddenly Miss Curly Sue.
To this day I blame it on puberty. Hormones can do that, right? Needless to say, I was clueless on how to style my hair! No one else in my family has curly hair like me (just lucky, I guess), and none of my friends had curly hair. I experimented with gel and hairspray for years until I discovered mousse. Mousse for curly hair is something I swear by. Right now curl creams are very trendy, but I’ve tried a few and have to say, I am not a fan.
While the products I use change all the time, I usually use some sort of leave-in conditioner, a mousse and hairspray. I prefer mousse and hairspray that have a flexible or medium hold. I stay away from anything that says strong hold because I hate crunchy curls. Handy tools to have are a blowdryer with a basket diffuser and a curling wand or a curling iron.
