NYC 2011 PART THREE: Dessert

Cupcakes have taken America by storm in the last few years with trendy cupcake shops and shows like Cupcake Wars. I remember when Tampa’s first dedicated cupcake shop opened when I was in high school! I hope by now our readers have come to realize our slight cupcake obsession as well. So naturally the first food post from NYC is about our favorite meal, dessert.

Magnolia Bakery was at the very top of Lauren’s to-do list, Serendipity 3‘s famous Frrrozen Hot Chocolate was at the top of mine, and then Crumbs cupcakes some how found there way on the agenda.

Crumbs Bake Shop
Crumbs has over a dozen New York locations, as well as shops in California, Connecticut, DC, Illinois, New Jersey, and Virginia.
We went to the one at 1675 Broadway at 53rd, New York, NY 10019.

Sosie’s Cookie Dough Cupcake
Lauren’s Half-Baked Cupcake
Red Velvet Colossal Cupcake

SOSIE: They were very creative with their cupcakes, and it all looked sooo good. I had the cookie dough cupcake. The frosting was yummy but the cake was kind of plain. I guess I was expecting a cookie flavored cupcake or a cupcake with cookie dough pieces. I like that they listed their ingredients since I have food allergies.

LAUREN: It was really good. I got the half baked cupcake. Unfortunately the marble cake was basically all vanilla, and I wished there was more chocolate. My frosting was only so-so. I liked how many creative cupcakes they had, and I wanted the mini sampler pack but it was too expensive. I really liked that they had the calories listed next to each dessert.

KELSEY: I did not get a cupcake, I was just too full after our first day with Katz’s and S’MAC, but I was really impressed by their wide selection. In particular, I was in awe over their Colossal cupcakes. You may not be able to tell from the image above, but this cupcake is the biggest thing I’ve ever seen. Magnolia Bakery
Magnolia has four locations in Manhattan, as well as one in Los Angeles and Dubai.
We went to the one at 401 Bleecker Street, New York, NY 10014

Our selections. Top (mine), Barbie vanilla on vanilla and Red Velvet with Cream Cheese Frosting. Left (Lauren’s), Red Velvet with Cream Cheese Frosting and Chocolate on Chocolate, Right (Sosie’s) Chocolate on Vanilla and Vanilla on Vanilla.

SOSIE: The cupcakes there were very good, but I really liked the oatmeal raisin cookie that I got. It was probably one of the best oatmeal raisin cookie I’ve ever had. It wasn’t too crunchy or too soft.

LAUREN: It was cute and perfect. They didn’t have creative flavors like Crumbs but they had great tasting cupcakes in general with good frosting to cupcake ratio. It was really cute inside but there was no place to eat inside, so we ate at benches nearby. I wish I could have tried their other cake desserts because they had more than just cupcakes, but maybe another time.

KELSEY: Magnolia is definitely more classic than creative, which certainly isn’t a bad thing. I was glad the cupcakes were an average size because then I didn’t feel guilty buying two! They sucked me in with the barbie cupcake, even though it was a dollar more. It turns our the heart on top that I thought was plastic turned out to be white chocolate!

Serendipity 3
225 East 60th Street, New York, NY 10022

Lauren and Serendipity 3’s gigantic menu
They were filming a segment for Japanese television about Serendipity breaking some sort of world record for most expensive dessert. Something to do with truffles and golf flakes… yikes!
Serendipity 3’s famous Frrrozen Hot Chocolate (yes, Frrrozen with three R’s is a registered trademark)

LAUREN: They had an $8.50 per person minimum which was annoying because originally Kelsey and I only wanted to split one and Sosie didn’t want to order anything. Kelsey and I ended up ordering our own and the waiter let Sosie stay. I ordered the Frrrozen Hot Chocolate with peanut butter and I really liked it. It was really funny that they were filming the segment next to us about a $25,000 dessert.

KELSEY: For the long line it was a relatively short wait and there was plenty to look at near the door. I saw a coin purse I had purchased at Economy Candy and was glad I did because it was pricier at Serendipity, of course. The menu was gigantic, and though it was entertaining to read with all their little jokes, it was a tad overwhelming. I’d love to go back and try real food next time. The Frrrozen Hot Chocolate was great, but I didn’t like the whipped topping at all, and I’m a huge whipped cream fan. The order minimum is understandable but it did put us in a weird situational. Luckily we had a kind waiter that let Sosie stay.

I love this! The last time I went to NYC, I did a big cupcake crawl, too. It’s obviously tough to hit EVERY place though. Magnolia and Crumbs are definitely favorites… And I have dreams of visiting Serendipity some day! 🙂

There is a Crumbs Bake Shop near the area and I plan to pay it a visit soon. Probably sooner than later, now that I’ve seen what’s on offer.
